Ekow Ankumah Story

Rain is one of the happiest, friendliest kids you will ever meet.  Every Monday I get the opportunity to spend time with him and it is one of the highlights of my week.  Without fail when I arrive at Reading Circle, Rain will rush towards me and want to play games, show me his art, or see how far I can lift him.  It is such a joy to be Rain's mentor. You would never tell by these interactions that Rain is actually a refugee from Myanmar - formerly Burma, that has come to the US with the hope of a better life for him and his family.

Every week through reading circle Rain and I spend time working on his reading.  He is a super smart kid and a quick learner.  It's been so fun seeing his progress over the months and we are only scratching the surface of his potential. In addition to reading,  I also have the opportunity and honor to hear what is going on in Rain's world when we're not in Reading Circle.  Through this time I get to hear the highs and lows of school, learn more about Rain's interests and here about his family.  Rain just welcomed a new baby brother into the family and he is already helping out with the diapers!  Most weeks we will pray for his family and his baby brother for them to be healthy and get some sleep.

I love that I get to pray with Rain for him and his family.  I definitely believe the Lord is using our time together to show him there are people besides his family that love him.  I think that the Lord is impressing on his heart that there is something greater than what he is experiencing now and that even though he doesn’t quite grasp all of it yet he’s seeing that there’s more.
I can’t think of a better way to practically live out my faith, learn about new cultures, and help these students succeed in their new country.
