Reading Circle (RC) is a gospel-centered one- to one literacy and mentoring program that serves refugee students in Dallas. The RC is a weekly commitment as each volunteer is assigned and trained to work with their own student in order to meet his/her own individualized academic needs.
The foundation of all that we say or do is compelled by the gospel of Christ. Our vision is to empower students with literacy, cultivate mentor relationships, and equip students to become servant leaders. You don't have to be a teacher or have an educational background to learn how to work with a student. We will train you in working with your student in an individualized plan to develop them at their own pace. It is a weekly commitment where we ask that you to join us in what the Lord is doing in our midst
We have normal breaks throughout the year and work with you regarding various reasons to be absent - but do ask for consistency for each of our mentors.
If you would like to serve, but a consistent weekly commitment is not possible - we would love for you to apply for a substitute position.
The registration fee is $40 for all positions. (This pays for your background check and training fee.) Once you have signed up you will have the Youtube videos sent to you to view to help prepare you for some of the aspects of our program. We will have an "in-person" training to go over the aspects of the resettlement process - and a hands-on look at what it would be like for you to work with your student. You will have a choice of what night to serve with your student.
We meet at either the Northwest Community Center at 5730 Pineland Dr. or Vickery Park Library at 8333 Park Lane.
Once registered, you will be contacted with the next steps.
